About Reliance Jio

In 2005, Anil Ambani and Mukesh Ambani underwent a significant split, marking one of the most notable de-mergers in the industry. As a result, Mukesh Ambani’s ambitious project, Reliance Infocom, became part of the Anil Ambani Group. However, Mukesh Ambani didn’t let this setback deter his vision for a cutting-edge 4G network and went on to acquire Infotel Broadband Services Limited, the sole successful bidder for 4G across India.

Under Mukesh Ambani’s leadership, Reliance Limited embarked on the establishment of a groundbreaking high-speed optical fibre 4G network, surpassing the capabilities of traditional 4G technology. This endeavour gave birth to Reliance Jio Infocom Ltd, commonly known as Jio today. Jio revolutionised the telecom industry by being the first to offer 4G LTE services and VoLTE services.

On September 5, 2016, Jio unveiled its 4G and VoLTE services to the public, simultaneously introducing its LYF smartphone series. Unlike its competitors, Reliance Jio Infocom Ltd (RJIL) focused primarily on high-speed data rather than voice and SMS services. Jio disrupted the market during its launch by offering data plans that provided 1GB of 4G data per day, while other telecom providers offered only 1GB per month.

Jio’s entry into the price-sensitive Indian market brought about a paradigm shift. Previously, 1GB of 4G data would cost around Rs 250-300, but with Jio’s arrival, the price plummeted to as low as Rs 5 per GB during the initial days. Additionally, Jio offered all its Prime members free voice calling and 100 free SMS per day, further enticing customers with its exceptional value.

The highly anticipated ‘JioPhone Next’ is a collaborative effort between Reliance, led by Mukesh Ambani, and tech giant Google. Originally planned for release on Ganesh Chaturthi, September 10, 2021, this revolutionary product encountered a setback due to the global shortage of semiconductors. Consequently, its launch was postponed until at least Diwali, as reported on September 10, 2021. Reliance Telecommunication quickly responded by initiating testing among a limited group of users, aiming to refine the device and ensure a foolproof experience by November, in time for the festive season of Diwali. The extended timeline also allowed Reliance Jio to address the global semiconductor shortage effectively.

Finally, on November 4, 2021, the JioPhone Next was officially introduced. The phone is priced at Rs 6,499 and boasts the Android-powered Pragati OS and a Qualcomm Snapdragon QM215 processor. Additionally, users who are unable to make upfront payments can acquire the JioPhone Next by paying only Rs 1,999, with the remaining amount settled through monthly instalments.

As an entry-level budget phone, the JioPhone Next presents an attractive option for those with limited financial resources, making it a viable choice. However, it does come with certain drawbacks to consider:

  • Sluggish performance due to insufficient RAM.
  • The primary SIM slot can only accommodate a Jio sim.
  • Failure to make timely payments may result in the phone being remotely disabled by the financer.
  • While it operates on an Android OS, it includes JIO customisations.

Mukesh Ambani, widely regarded as the richest man in India, hails from the renowned Ambani family, often recognised as the wealthiest family in Asia by Forbes. He served as the Chief Managing Director (CMD) of Reliance Industries Ltd, one of India’s largest conglomerates.

Born in Aden and raised in Mumbai, Mukesh Ambani has become one of the country’s most influential and powerful figures, sharing his business acumen with the world. He owns the world’s largest refinery and has garnered numerous noteworthy achievements throughout his career. Additionally, he holds positions in esteemed institutions.

Until June 27, 2022, Mukesh Ambani served as the Director and Chairman of Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd. However, he stepped down from these roles on that date. Subsequently, his son, Akash Ambani, a Non-Executive Director, was appointed as the Chairman of the company, according to reports dated June 29, 2022. The Jio board also announced the appointments of Raminder Singh Gujral and K.V. Chowdary as additional directors, serving as independent directors for the next 5 years, starting from June 27, 2022. Furthermore, Pankaj Mohan Pawar has been appointed as the Managing Director of the Jio business, also for a period of 5 years.

Jio – Startup Story | How was Jio Started?

Mukesh Ambani, the founder of Jio, once shared the story behind the inception of this groundbreaking idea. It all began when his daughter, Isha Ambani, returned home from Yale University during the holidays in 2011. During her time in the United States, she experienced the frustration of poor internet connectivity at their residence, which hindered her ability to submit coursework.

Isha conveyed her dissatisfaction to her father, highlighting the dire state of internet connectivity in India. This conversation served as a pivotal moment for Mukesh Ambani, as he recognized the widespread issue of limited and expensive data services plaguing the majority of Indians.

Inspired by his daughter’s firsthand experience, Mukesh Ambani embarked on a mission to transform the data landscape in India. He envisioned making data services abundant and affordable across every corner of the country. This vision ultimately gave rise to Reliance Telecommunication’s Jio business line, which sought to revolutionize the accessibility and affordability of data services for all Indians.
